Candle Sconces - Unique Designs Beyond The Common

!±8± Candle Sconces - Unique Designs Beyond The Common

There is something immortally romantic about the dim and yet evocative light coming from a candle. And though candles are often associated with the horror, the right execution will create a love-filled atmosphere with a touch of elegance. And this is why there is such a thing called 'candlelight dinner' right? The romance is unmistakable.

And so even after decades since the invention of the first light bulb, it is no wonder that people still turn to candles even when a more advanced alternative is present. For example, a couple would prefer a candlelight setting for their date even when brighter ceiling lights is available.

Some designers even came up with a more brilliant idea. The Maxim Lighting Morocco Traditional Wall Sconce for example has a light bulb that is shaped like a candle flame attached to a faux candle body. As a result, the romance of candlelight is retained even when a light bulb is used.

But it seems that designers just cannot get enough of innovations. They also made candle sconces that take a leap from the traditional form. The following are examples of wall sconces that are somewhat different than most:

Inspiration From Nature

The Malanta Knowles by Paragon Picture Gallery Leaf Motif Candle Sconce is an example of a forward leap in design. Instead of the traditional form, it is adorned by a unique iron wrought body that is designed after leaves.

The effect is an impeccable design inspired by Mother Nature. If you are trying to pull off a nature-themed interior design, this one is a good choice to make.

Floral Design

For a more feminine choice, the floral design of the Maxim Lighting Elegante Traditional Wall Sconce will definitely appeal to you sense. The beautiful wrought iron sculpture features two spiraling twig design that is adorned by multiple flowers made of crystal.

And right above the flowery metal work are two pieces electric candlelight. Although quite contemporary in style, the dark color scheme of this candle sconce will make it a fine addition even to a modern house.

The Squares

You might expect flowers, iron wrought, and crystal figures when thinking about candle sconces. But wait until you see the Uttermost Siam Traditional Candlelight Wall Sculpture. With its square design, the very form of it is very inviting indeed.

And because of its multiple square designs, this candle sconce can also handle more light bulbs that other wall sconces.

The White Brilliance

For homes with a white overall interior design, the grandiose Meyda Tiffany Arlington Transitional Wall Sconce is beautiful addition. Although it is wall sconce, it really reminds you of chandeliers.

The design consists of two faux candles powered by a flame-shape bulb, and clear crystals adorn the form of this sconce. This will be a perfect choice if you have a similarly white chandelier adorning the ceiling of your house.

What is "Mission Style" Stained Glass?

!±8± What is "Mission Style" Stained Glass?

Mission style stained glass, also known as "Frank Lloyd Wright", "Arts & Crafts", "Craftsman", "Prairie" or "Southwestern" stained glass is characterized by straight lines forming squares and rectangles. Mission style lamps come with straight-edged shades and oak or metal casting bases.

Mission style refers to a style of stained glass with a pronounced geometry in design. Not all Mission design fits the classic mold and the differences between Mission, Craftsman, and Arts & Crafts lighting styles are subjective. Yet, to the detailed eye, the style differences are obvious.

What we call Transitional Mission lamps rests comfortably in the gray areas. Transitional Mission is lighter and more feminine than its related styles, combining a square look with softer curves and profiles drawn from Classical and Colonial sources, making it especially suitable for rooms that benefit from a less formal approach.

While debate continues about the true origin of the term "Mission," it is usually seen evolving from English Arts & Crafts roots and intimately related to the American Craftsman movement. Mission is less a philosophy than a look - which can be summed up, and oversimplified, as square and rustic. Being eclectic, the style remains distinctive and popular to this day.

Mission Style versus Tiffany Style

Mission style stained glass tends to be very different from Tiffany style stained glass. One of the biggest differences is the color. Mission style is very subtle; it takes a lot of its inspiration from the earth, specifically the desert. The colors of the stained glass are usually brown, gold, and amber. Occasionally you might also find green, red, or rich orange. It is meant to go perfectly with simple dark wood furniture and earthy tones. In home design and furnishings, it emphasizes natural materials, especially wood.

The revival in popularity of Mission styles stems largely from their association with handcrafted elements, a rarity in this technologically advanced age. These pieces offer an heirloom quality and a patina that deepens with age.

Mission and Arts & Crafts style furnishings and interiors are typically very durable and classic with a timeless appeal.

Add to Your Decor

Adding Mission style stained glass, decor and accessories is a great way to improve the interior design of your home. You can combine Mission and Art Nouveau style items that add warmth with the interesting lines and feel of a Frank Lloyd Wright room.

Another use of Mission style is outdoor lighting fixtures that usually have the look and feel of carriage lamps. They are perfect for garages, entryways and patios.

Experiencing a resurgence of popularity of stained glass lamps in the late 20th century and into the 21st, the Mission-style continues to gain admirers. Emerging from the Arts & Crafts movement in the 1860s, it was a protest against the mass-produced ornate decor of the Victorian Era.

Cleaning Stained Glass Properly

!±8± Cleaning Stained Glass Properly

Cleaning stained glass when it becomes dirty, allows the maximum amount of light to pass through it and thus maintains its beauty.

Comprised of several different colors and shapes of favrile glass, the beauty of this glass depends on the light it receives and transmits. The amount of the light and the direction that it hits the glass can constantly change the appearance of the artwork. Keep your stained glass table lamps and floor lamps and window hangings, chandeliers and wall sconces looking their best to show off their original colors.

Handcrafted from favrile glass, a form of glass patented by Louis Tiffany in 1894. The glass is held together with copper and solder, and cleaning products containing vinegar, ammonia, or any acid base destroys the solder holding the glass together.

Before cleaning any lampshade or fixture, disconnect the power source (unplug from outlets).

Normal Cleaning

Light dusting with a feather duster or wipe with a clean dry cloth is all that is usually needed.

Grimy Stained Glass

For a grimy fixture, place a small dab of lemon-based furniture polish on soft clean cloth and wipe gently. Never apply the polish directly to the piece being cleaned.

Covered with Heavy Layers of Grease

For fixtures near cooking areas in kitchens, to remove heavy layers of greasy buildup or dirt, Mr. Clean Top Job® works best for cleaning the stained glass. Apply the cleaner to a soft cloth, and wipe gently. After cleaning, reapply lemon-oil based furniture polish to the shade, for best results.
Your stained glass fixtures will gleam and transmit colored light they were designed to shine through them to beautify your room.
